Ignore

The District 54 race is rearing its ugly hair again (as if anyone doubted that an election won by 51 votes wouldn’t be contested).

http://alablawg.wordpress.com/2006/07/28/district-54-again/" target="_blank" target="_blank">AlabLAWg managed to pipe up with some excelent points including this little gem about the WAR ON DUMB article that I http://3choboomer.net/2006/07/25/thar-be-monsters-here/" target="_blank" target="_blank">blogged about last week:

The mayor’s atlas is not only wrong, but anyone who accepts it cares not for Birmingham, and has plenty of their own prejudices.

First, that Kincaid and Hendricks could be so wrong about the make-up of the area means they have no interest at all in the area. That is a shame, because these are the wealthiest neighborhoods in B’ham. And that these well-to-do people choose to live in B’ham in spite of the high crime, bad schools, and inept leadership, means that they really love the city. Yet the mayor, and Hendricks ignore them. The resource is not just untapped, it is rejected. That is bad for B’ham.

Amen Brother, Amen…

Shore

Fairlyn had quite the grainy time at the beach. I’m sure she injested nearly as much sand as I got in my shoes all week. Hopefully sand is good ruffage.

Her first reactions to things like the surf and salt water are priceless memories that I will never forget.

More pics after the jump…

Subaru Whore

I whored myself out to the COBB/GOTO:Racing Subaru Legacy GT team this weekend at the Barber Motorsports Park. They are a very well organized team and I really didn’t do too much to help them other than watch them work. I could have been a bad luck charm as they had a few electrical gremlins on the pace lap and started the race in the pits. They finally got back out on to the track a few laps down, and quickly moved through the field (even passing in the grass after being pushed off the track by a BMW). They were not able to get back on the lead lap before they retired due to some mechanical issues (I was asked not to go into any details about the mechanical issues by the team owner, and if that changes, I’ll post up the details).

However all was not lost for Subaru’s racing efforts Saturday. The ICY/Pheonix Subaru Legacy GT (which is sponsored by Subaru themselves) finished the race in 2nd place and they would have won the race outright had the Grand Am officials not called off the race due to the threat of severe weather. (All we got was rain, and the AWD Legacy would have cleaned house against the other rear and front wheel drive competitors). I also heard a little rumor that because of politics, the ICY team was not forced to monitor the turbo boost on their car (All of the other turbo and supercharged cars are forced to monitor their boost including the other Subaru Legacy). Since racing is all about cheating within the rules, I’m sure they were running much more boost than they were supposed to, and subsequently making much more power than the rest of the field. But I ain’t one to gossip, so you didn’t hear that from me…

I’m not an avid reader (unless it’s online). Dr. Wife bought me countless books about child rearing and what to expect while she’s expecting, etc… Sadly I never read any of them, (but I quickly read any article she sends to me via email or link).

So the fact that I’m posting about a book is pretty spectacular.

But alas, this one is just full of pretty pictures:

Historic Photos of Birmingham was just released a few weeks ago and it was written by the BPL’s archivist James L. Baggett (oh the hours I could spend talking to that guy).

I first fell in love with pictures of old Birmingham while looking at a book published by the Birmingham Historical Society at my grandparents house about 10 years ago. I was amazed by the fact that a trolly used to go down the center of Highland Ave, and there used to be an elaborate train station on the east side of downtown.

About 2 years ago I dropped close to $100 for digital copys of about 12 historical pictures of Birmingham including one of my house shortly after it was built in 1948. All 12 prints decorate my office now :) I can’t wait to get a copy of this book.

Those of you wishing to meet the Author of this book may do so this afternoon (Thursday) @ 4:30 on the 4th floor of the Main branch of the Birmingham Public Library downtown.

Hat tip again to Dre for the info

The people who make this stuff or the people who hunt it down and consume it like ravenous media starved Internet creatures?

Jason proposed that to me yesterday….
I say it doesn’t matter, this crap is funny, and whoever made it is one talented dude/dudette :)

Hat tip to the_outer.net for being just as media starved as I am…

Well, I got word that my grandmother wasn’t doing very well early Friday afternoon, (see my last post) so I missed out on seeing what undoubtably was an awesome show (if you went, please post up your impressions!).

This weekend it looks like it’ll be Wild Sweet Orange playing right down the street from casa de 3cho @ Bottletree Doors @ 8PM, $10/head.

It looks to be another awesome weekend for independent artists and their fans here in Birmingham.

I’ve got sketchy details about what appears to be an incredible show brewing over at Sloss Furnaces Friday night (June 30th) around 7pm.

The show appears to be a benefit for a film student at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) Matt Hartfield so he can make his senior project film.
Cool, that’s great… But what am I going to get for my $5 donation?

How about the best in indie, rock, and folk that central Alabama has ever had to showcase:

The Bridges
I saw these incredibly talented kids (ages 16 – 21) last weekend at the “Future Railyard benefit” and they blew me away. 4 part harmony, innocent yet thought provoking lyrics, and a TIGHT acoustic sound. The interview they did for Tapestry on WBHM is a MUST listen.

Wild Sweet Orange
I haven’t seen these guys live yet but they’ve been getting a lot of buzz over on Reg’s Coffee House and they’ve been getting some airplay on the westcoast. I really like what I hear on their myspace site… Nice poppy indie sound and they swear that David Lynch is one of their influences so you know that it has to be interesting!

Kiss Me at the Gate
Rather Rilo Kiley like. Also getting tons of buzz from Reg. I’m really looking forward to seeing these guys as well. Also see http://www.kissmeatthegate.com/

The Great Book of John
Folk rock, upright bass, both male and female singers, what more could you ask for?

In addition to all of this great music, the night will start off with a couple of student films from SCAD and what I can only imagine is a storyboard presentation of Matt’s senior project…

Now I’m off to convince everyone that I’ve made plans with this weekend to change them
