Music

I’ve been stupid busy at work, so I guess it’s great that Helluva covered this yesterday, so just head over to his place and fill out your schedule for this weekend….

And if you need something to do to fill in the last hour or so of work:

KBCO HD-2 Studio C Stream <– All in studio performances going back to 1988, what you wish your local radio station was (OMG, they’re playing Short Skirt, Long Jacket by CAKE right now!!!)

WorkPlay is the place.
Saturday @ 9 is the time.
$8 is the price (in advance).
The Ugli Stick is the band.

It’s the CD release show for The Ugil Stick’s latest album “Nostoi”. Opening acts are Jackons NLA and Diesel.

I’m really pumped about this album. It really shows how the band has narrowed it’s focus and defined their sound. I think their website said it best:

…Recorded at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals and produced by Jimmy Nutt, who has worked with the Drive-by Truckers and Jimmy Buffett, this 13-song CD is THE best The Ugli Stick has ever sounded!
Phenominal musicians Daivd Hood (”The Swampers”), Bob Wray (Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Kris Kristofferson and more) and Larry Byrom (Steppenwolf, Neil Young, The Eagles and more) join the band on numerous tracks. Plus two-time Grammy winner Alan Schulman (Ricky Skaggs, Jimmy Buffett and more) helped Jimmy Nutt with some of the final mixing! The resulting CD is absolutely amazing! What does it sound like? Nothing you’ve heard before!

The guys will also be doing an acoustic instore performace at Sam Goody in the Galleria @ 2PM on Saturday where you can pre-purchase the album before it’s street date of Tuesday August 8th.

Below are a couple of tracks from the album that I got a few weeks back. Note: None of these tracks have gone through final mixing or engineering, so they may be different on the CD. Also keep in mind that my site can’t seem to serve up the mp3’s fast enough right now, so you may need to pause it to let it buffer.

I can’t exactly explain why I like this guy’s music. I mean, I normally don’t like dance/DJ Mixes, etc. (except for Funker Vogt) but holy crap this guy is just freaking retarded…

Imagine every song you heard at the Skate Rink growing up mixed with modern day Hip-Hop and everything from the Talking Heads to Smashing Pumpkins thrown in for good measure.

I think I like it cause it’s so freaking odd….

Well, I got word that my grandmother wasn’t doing very well early Friday afternoon, (see my last post) so I missed out on seeing what undoubtably was an awesome show (if you went, please post up your impressions!).

This weekend it looks like it’ll be Wild Sweet Orange playing right down the street from casa de 3cho @ Bottletree Doors @ 8PM, $10/head.

It looks to be another awesome weekend for independent artists and their fans here in Birmingham.

I’ve got sketchy details about what appears to be an incredible show brewing over at Sloss Furnaces Friday night (June 30th) around 7pm.

The show appears to be a benefit for a film student at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) Matt Hartfield so he can make his senior project film.
Cool, that’s great… But what am I going to get for my $5 donation?

How about the best in indie, rock, and folk that central Alabama has ever had to showcase:

The Bridges
I saw these incredibly talented kids (ages 16 - 21) last weekend at the “Future Railyard benefit” and they blew me away. 4 part harmony, innocent yet thought provoking lyrics, and a TIGHT acoustic sound. The interview they did for Tapestry on WBHM is a MUST listen.

Wild Sweet Orange
I haven’t seen these guys live yet but they’ve been getting a lot of buzz over on Reg’s Coffee House and they’ve been getting some airplay on the westcoast. I really like what I hear on their myspace site… Nice poppy indie sound and they swear that David Lynch is one of their influences so you know that it has to be interesting!

Kiss Me at the Gate
Rather Rilo Kiley like. Also getting tons of buzz from Reg. I’m really looking forward to seeing these guys as well. Also see http://www.kissmeatthegate.com/

The Great Book of John
Folk rock, upright bass, both male and female singers, what more could you ask for?

In addition to all of this great music, the night will start off with a couple of student films from SCAD and what I can only imagine is a storyboard presentation of Matt’s senior project…

Now I’m off to convince everyone that I’ve made plans with this weekend to change them
