NA Car of the Year Honda Civic
NA Truck of the Year Honda RidgelineHonda sweeped the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards with their new Civic and Ridgeline, their debut into the light truck arena. The winners are chosen by 49 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada (which eliminates any potential influence that advertising dollars can bring). The Civic and Ridgeline beat out the Ford Fusion, Pontiac Solstice, Ford Explorer, and Nissan Xterra. This marks the first time in the awards history that a single manufacturer has takend both awards.

In my opinion, the value of the Civic (starting MSRP of $14,360) and the unique features of the Ridgeline (the locking trunk in the bed) edged out their competitors. Congrats Honda.

Biggest Mercedes Benz

Merc GL Class 7 pax, bigger than the lengthy R Class that was unveiled last year, and bigger than anything else in the DCX lineup (short of their commercial vehicles anyway); the new GL replaces the venerable G-wagon (the Boxy Jeep like military vehicle-come-big-ballin -dub-donner) as *the* offroad Benz (despite the fact that it’s built on the same Unit-body platform as the ML and R and in the same plant a mere 40 miles away from mi casa).
The trims are GL 500 with a 5.5-liter, 388-hp V-8, and the GL 450 with a 340-hp, 4.6-liter V-8 (why the number can’t match the displacement is a mystery to me) . Full-time all-wheel drive is standard.
I personally think this vehicle belongs in the same place as every HUMMER, crumpled up in a board room trash bin after it was shit-canned. Why anyone needs a vehicle this big is lost on me. The only “redeeming” factor about this vehicle is the fact that it will be offered with the 3.2L Turbo Diesel in the near future. That engine promises50 State emissions (even meeting the tougher 2008 Diesel standards) and 26MPG on the highway, un-heard of for an SUV of this size.

Other Notables from Day one

A new entry level car from Honda called the Fit. The Civic’s been growing in size, price, and even stature since the early 80’s so Honda’s bringing in a proven performer from the Japanese market (called the Jazz there) to Fit (how cute) under the Civic in it’s lineup.

Infinity showed off their “coupe concept” that’s undoubtedly the next G35 (G45?). The casual observer would probably not be able to tell this concept from the current G35, but in my opinion, that’s not a bad thing. The G35 coupe is sex on wheels, it’s hard to improve on perfection.

Mazda took the wraps off of its entry into the sea of new “crossovers” called the CX-7. This platform will be shared with Ford (and probably Lincoln and Mercury) so I guess the only real item of note here is the 2.3L Direct Injection Turbo engine (detuned to 240HP from the 280HP this same engine has in the Mazdaspeed 6) and available AWD.
It seems that the Subaru Forester XT (235HP/235lbft) started a bit of a mini-SUV horsepower battle back in 2004, and after 2 years of being un-contested, is facing fierce competition from this new Mazda and the new Toyota RAV4 which will be offered with a 260HP V6.

This week is the 2006 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

Media days started yesterday and the first thing I want to mention about the show is this damn fine looking BUICK that GM rolled out yesterday.

Biggest Shocker

Sexy Buick….two words that have never before been allowed in the same sentence….
Buick Enclave
It is called the Enclave, and it shares it’s platform with the replacement Saturn Vue and an Opel (Opel is a GM brand in Europe).
GM’s move to consolidate GMC, Buick, and Pontiac dealerships was a great move in my opinion, and fresh good looking product such as this may very well save GM. I wish them good luck, they’re going to need it.

Anyone that’s ever talked cars with me knows that I’m not a big fan of most of the crap that American car companies put out, so the fact that I’m leading with a story about a BUICK is a big deal…

Biggest of the Big

And most of the most… Lexus rolled out the new LS460L.
Lexus LS460L
That extra L stands for LOOOOONG. Try a 203 inch wheelbase (that’s almost 90 inches bigger than the monstrosity that is the HUMMER H2), 19 speaker audio system w/ an internal hard drive that can store 4000 songs (first thing out of my wife’s mouth when I told her about the hard drive in the car: “How in the world would you get the songs on to the hard drive?” I’ve created a nerd monster, I’m so proud!), and eight (yes 8) gears in the automatic gearbox. The 4.6L V8 promises 380 hp, 370 lb-ft of torque and zero to 60 times of 5.5 seconds. A hybrid version will be shown at the New York Auto Show in April.

Biggest throwback to yesteryear

The Chrysler group recycled two names bringing back both the Challenger and the Imperial nameplates.
Both cars are built on the LX platform shared with the Chrysler 300, and the Dodge Magnum/Charger. Stretched 17 inches in the form of the Imperial, and shortened by 4 with the Challenger.

Chrysler Imperial
The thing I’m most happy about? They’re finally putting a manual transmission on those wonderful marketing machines known as the HEMI engine.

More to come…

AWDRE at the Dragon

Flip C just drove back to Huntsville in my beloved 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS.

She was a good fun car.

I don’t know if I’ll ever own a car that was as balls to the wall modified as that one was. But it sure was fun, and the experience I gained from wrenching on her is priceless.

Luckily, she’s going to a good home. Philip is a ScoobyNut much like myself. He actually owned a car nearly exactly like mine that met its untimely death a few months back thanks to a 3 day veteran of driving  .

Philip is getting her in a stockish form. Sans turbo, suspension, big brakes, and electronic goodies. But he’s got plans of his own for her

Well, out with the old, in with the new

Really bad pic of my car...
A better pic is coming, I promise!

250 ponies, and 250 ft/lbs of torque to haul my groceries and new baby around with.
All that and All Wheel Drive too :)

I’m still in the break in period, so she’s yet to see anything north of 4000RPM (and it already puts a smile on my face).
This car is fun to drive, it hauls ass and groceries, and it’s got plenty of room for my family of about to be 3.
Sport-Utilities are so inappropriately named…

And I definitely never thought that a bunch of my friends would get together and buy me one! (even if it is a bit tight on mi bum)
da seat

All of the peeps listed below got together and bought a RECARO car seat for my daughter (who isn’t even expected until July 31st!). It’ll be another couple of months until she’s big enough to enjoy it, but she’ll have the best seat in the car to say the least!

On top of it all, they gave it to me at the Atlanta warehouse meet!

From my very first Subaru meet way back in 2000, I’ve known that Subaru enthusiasts were a special crew, and I’m proud to report that nothing has changed. If anything, we’ve gotten closer as a group and the generosity and comradery of everyone from nasioc.com continues to amaze me!

EDIT: It has been brought to my attention (by Eric Irvin) that I should put this screwdriver on Ebay. Tell me what you think by posting a comment!

ydant (Matthew) was over at my place last night helping me remove my oil pan. We had finally figured out the secret way to hold the thin paint scraper and pound it between the oil pan and block to break the seal.
Matt was out from under the car messing with the jack when I got very adamant about him taking a look inside the oil pan. I’m sure he just thought I wanted him to see how yet again it was hanging up on the sump, but no. I wanted him to see this:

Yes, there was a BIG ASS SCREWDRIVER in my FREAKING OIL PAN. Now for those of you that don’t know, I bought my car (2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS) in January of 2002 from Jeff 2.5RS. He had done a majority of the modifications to the car, including the installation of a Minnam Turbo Kit (which includes a tapped oil pan for the oil return from the turbo).

I can only assume that he is the culprit, and he simply overlooked the screwdriver (somehow) when he was installing the oil pan . Edit: It turns out he had a shop install the oil pan for him, guess it’s their snafu.

Anyway, more pics:

Notice how the screwdriver scratched the coating off of the inside of the oil pan, and how the sucker soaked up a bunch of oil..

FWIW, my strainer didn’t have (much of) anything in it, and my engine never had any ill effects from the screwdriver (that I know of).

All in all, I’d say I’m one lucky SOB.
