Hendricks-Todd hearing delayed
MONTGOMERY— The Democratic party today delayed a hearing that would have decided the outcome of the contested House District 54 runoff between Gaynell Hendricks and Patricia Todd.

Party officials said a mix-up over who would serve on the five-person committee presiding over the hearing forced them to postpone. Some members who had been selected chose not to participate at the last minute, they said.

Todd defeated Hendricks by 59 votes in a June 18 runoff, 1,173 to 1,114. The house district is in Birmingham.

Hendrick’ mother-in-law challenged the outcome on July 28, claiming Todd had received “illegal votes.” She also said Todd failed to file a financial disclosure report on time, thereby hiding from the public a $25,000 contribution by a national gay activist group.

No new date has been set for the hearing, though officials said they hoped to reconvene some time next week.

“I’m very patient by nature,” Hendricks said. “But I’m beginning to get impatient here.”

The “mixup” seems a little fishy to me…

The election that was won via votes several weeks ago should be won via committee later on this morning (the meeting started about an hour and 15 min ago).

The local blogosphere is abuzz with tons of fresh new info on the case.

Go check it out for yourself, and I’ll hopefully have the final decision (before Hendrick’s mother in law takes it to the appeals court) in a few minutes….

We hardly knew ye….

Looks like the city council will vote to DE-annex 2000 acres of US Steel owned property that borders the Barber Motorsports Park.

I’m not really surprised that they didn’t fight the request, seeing as it was apparently made by Arrington’s admistration 12 years ago. But what does shock me is this little blurb from the AL.com article:

The residential development to be controlled by a division of U.S. Steele is part of that company’s larger plans to shut down its manufacturing operations in Birmingham and move to another city.

First of all, that is one difficult sentence to understand…

And then, wait, since when has USS planned on shutting down all its manufacturing operations in Birmingham? This is news to me!!

Please pipe up if you’ve got any info on this, it must be shared!

It’s time for the big show over at WorkPlay this weekend.

Marc Broussard Michael Warren

The Soulful Pop /Singer-Songwriter sounds of Louisanna native Marc Broussard will share the stage with Birmingham’s own Michael Warren (AAA /Singer-Songwriter). The show in the soundstage way in the back of WorkPlay to accomadate more than the normal 500 or so patrons. This show will sell out if it hasn’t already (but knowing Birmingham, it will probably sell out about an hour before the show).

Also of great importance to myself this weekend is a little thing called AutoX (Auto Cross). Me, in my grocery getter, driving as fast as I can through a course of cones set up in the BRC’s parking lot. Time is added for every cone you knock over and time is subtracted for every Sweepstakes patron you take out (the new time subtraction rule was sponsored by the SBC).

Our course is conciderably smaller than it was before the casino Sweepstakes came to town, but it’s still just as fun. Come watch several dozen people train their daily driver cars to massacre cones!

Maybe that’s what Mayor Kincade is planning. Maybe he’s just going to fire the Police Chief and he’ll just do it himself.

Will crime go down? Probably not, but it probably won’t go down as long as Nunn is Police Chief either.
Will moral come up? Probably not, but it probably won’t go up as long as Nunn is Police Chief either.
Will officers quit leaving the city for better pay? Probab… I think you can see where this is going….

Kincade said that Nunn did not have the authority to make personnel policy changes. If the Chief of Police does not have the authority to run her own police department, then why even have one Mr. Kincade?

Just fire her and run the damn thing yourself (like you already are) and save the city what is probably at least $100k/year…
