The main actor in the commercial is Peter Stormare, he also plays John Abruzzi in “Prison Break” and (I think) was also in the “Frogger” episode of Seinfeld as one of the guys helping George move the machine. He was born in Sweden so the accent is not much of a stretch.
don’t forget his awesome role in The Big Lebowski as Uli Kunkel/’Karl Hungus’, the nihilist… “We believe in nothing, Lebowski. Nothing. And tomorrow we come back and we cut off your chonson.”

too negative toward young people for my taste… it’s an expensive car, and the targets in those commercials represent young men who probably couldn’t afford such a car and who are not ready to drive something conservative like the vw.
I totally disagree. VW has never been about following the crowd, and there are plenty of 20 somethings fresh out of college, with money to burn on their first new car…
And some of those people don’t want to drive an automatic Toyota Camry.
I also FULLY disagree with your assumption that the GTI is conservative…
VW has in the last couple of decades appealed mostly to preppie white kids. This ad is without question a (funny) slam on kids lower in the food chain.
Here in Europe, if you are in your twenties and can afford a new Golf GTI you’re definitely not on the lower side of the food chain… this thing costs about 25k (Euros I might add). But in my humble opinion, this does a bigger service to brand appeal than to this specific model.
am i the only one who’s obsessed with zoolander and feel a zoolander (and also austen powers) reference here?
cool ads, makes vw relevant to a younger market, but i still think it’s very much aimed at the prep crowd. there’s more laughing at rather than laughing with. as in i’m not that cooly-geeky-american-rev-head so this is the car for me.
Funny Commercials. Peter Stormare is great. One of those actors you always remember for the role but can’t remember his name.
Wonder how long it’ll be before kids start tricking-out GTIs? Who woulda guessed 20 yrs ago they’d be street racing Civics? It couldn’t be as bad as the Scion. What’s the point of racing stripes & a spoiler on a box?
“Zoolander” !?! “Austin Powers” !?! hell no! mmm.
‘k my i’m John Stossel and I say “Give me a break”.
for real ? why would VW want to risk the prestige, reputation and kewlness factor during the launch of this brand new product in the US,(vw’s biggest market)and associate the product launch (either subliminally or sub-consciously) with the lamest, tasteless, trashiest, dumbest, worst
cringe/vomit inducing Hollywood garbage since “Battlefield earth: A saga of the year 3000″(John Travolta is cool though).
it’s just doesn’t make sense…wtf were they thinking? next thing you know ben stiller and zoolander creators will sue VW for royalties ?*shudder*

those were the most stupid commercials ever made, and if you thought they were awesome your stupid too. what a waste of time and money.
theres nothing that noone can say to testify that those commercials had any meaning, they made me not want to buy a vw. and I don’t care what you say of my response cause I’m a father of 2 with a degree in marketing and those would be thrown out after 5 seconds of watching and then the creator would be fired. as for my credentials for the haters – promo work I’ve done for: American Idol, 50 Cent, Lindsay Lohan, Fogdog.com, Sony and Honda. In my opinion VW is going after the young affluent male that considers himself a car enthusiast, but thinks that putting a bunch of big ass wings and useless hoodscoops on their cars is ridiculous.
Who knows, maybe you have a front wheel drive Honda with a monster wing on the back and that’s why you’re so upset.

I’m a late-twenties father of 2 and I think that they nailed their targeted demographic. I’m very pleased to see someone take a jab at individuals that “pimp” their ride with ground effects, wings, decals, loud mufflers and tiny engines. Absolutely great commercials. I haven’t stopped laughing at them.
Volkswagen’s new infomercials are poking fun at the Black Community, while selling White cars. Are the Germans really selling Volkswagens? Well, they are not leaving much to be interrupted. Their slogan is: white, blonde and German is superior.
You’ll have to see it to believe it. And if you don’t catch it on TV (FX channels, go to their website at: http://www.youtube.com
If anyone is being made fun of it’s Germans themselves.
There is one commercial out of the 3 that features a young black man’s car being “un-pimped”. Would it have been better if only “the white man’s” car was un-pimped, or would that have been discriminatory as well since it wouldn’t feature any black people?
By calling VW’s “White cars” and claiming that they are poking fun at the “Black Community” you are becoming part of the problem, not part of the solution!
There are plenty of things out there to get angry about when it comes to race relations. Hate crimes, *real world* job discrimination, it being ok for black people to call each other the “n-word”, etc.
This commercial is not the problem, and people like you thinking it is makes the struggle for race equality MORE difficult.
A quick google search shows that you’re an EEO manager for the GSA.
I hope that you approach your job with a more open mind than the one you used when you viewed these commercials.
I love these commercials! They totolly rock and you should so get a whole lot more of them. If you made DVDs with nothing but vee dub commercials with german engeneering in the house ya i would totolly buy a million copies (not really, i was only exaggerating on the “million copies” part but i would so buy it and i know a lot of other people who would buy it too)!
Francine, I’m curious. What’s your definition of a “White” car? And if you have a definition for a “White” car (which you obviously do), you then by default have a definition for a non “White” car. I’m curious of your “definitions”. Do tell.
They’re great commercials. They combine two funny stereotypical element in American society. Many young car guys have no taste and arty German people are weird. Very well done and got my attention. Now if the GTI was a better looking car I might be even more interested…lol
These are the best commercials I have seen in a long time. I can’t wait until they come on at night. As for the people who are coming on here and making fun of them, how about instead of pretending to be a marketing executive why dont you actually get off your computer chair and go make commercials and see what we have to say about them stupid.
It’s all about representing VW baby. I’ve owned nothing but a VW since I had a license. yeah, I have driven other vehicles, but VW is the ish. And I’m talkin’ 16+ years. It’s about time somebody stuck it to those punk rice burners who think stickers and a bolt on muffler tip are badass. Badass like a hello kitty purse! Long live VW!!!!!!!!!
These commercials are AWESOME!! On that site at the end of them (www.vwfeatures.com) you can customize the car, and watch a film with the car in it… BUT!!! The weird german girl does different stuff depending on how you customized the car!! GET THE XENON HEADLIGHTS!! It’s INSANE!! I can’t believe some people on here think it’s a conservative car… watch the weird videos on there!!!
I am so sick of people that care so much! Add a fun comment if you liked the adds otherwise rise above what you might consider stupid or discriminatory etc and just let others enjoy something…your comments are NEGATIVE and bring poeple down. And as those people that “police” these boards with their apparantly superior intellect picking holes where ever they see fit…regardless of whether I agreee they write with the same condesending overtones. Your comments are also NEGATIVE and bring people down. Jesus, I can’t believe I read all the way to the bottom of this…
I’ve been involved with Volkswagen since 1957. I have worked for VW since 1964 in all areas of service. I’m now in the independant service industry. I have been involved with professional road racing since 1987. Our Team has raced Volkswagen products, Mazda, Acura and are currently running Porsche. That said, let’s talk about the ads. They are different and amusing. The points they make are obvious. The issue I have is that they have to “bash” another marklet area to attemp to get your interest in thier product.
If VW is true to form, I would not put out hard earned cash on one of those cars till at least the third year of prodution. It takes the “engineers” that long to get the product right.
hi,
im a german exchange student in the USA and i looooooooove those commercials!!!!
I seriously almost died laughing when i saw the one where the guy says “deutschland” in that funny accent :D:D
i wanna download it to show to my friends in germany! does anybody know where?
The best commercials EVER for any car company.
Terrific writing, superb acting, awesome editing.
I don’t know who (or what) #36, aka Stupid is but this dickweed knows marketing like I know quantum mechanics. These spots rock; “stupid” is a f. tool. And very likely insane.
Who is the blonde in the VW commerical? People who think its racist? WTF? Becauses its a white car, with Germans, and its about unpimping a car. Who cares anyway its a funny commerical, thats it. Fuck all you Nigger Lovers!
german engineering in vw’s are not as good as in other areas: ie flight and armored tanks (historical), but their mercedes is good. hopefully the vw has gotten better.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me the name of the band in the new VW commercial….it’s the commercial with two guys in the front, and the salesman in the back seat, and the passenger realizes that the VW has an mp3 player jack, and they turn up the music and jam out while the salesman tries to tell them about the features (and his words are subtitled). If anyone could help, that would be great.
How may I find the an old VW commercial? The one advertising the braking system with the couple and the wrong video return to blockbuster? I really need to find this because it actually happened to me.
I’ve just seen the dumbest commercial about VW’s.There’s a black man with a vw salesman, below them is a white man with his girl friend ,who is oriental, looking at a vw.Everytime he gets close to the car ,the black man presses the alarm. What does this mean?
How is this telling me to by this car?

Thanks,
A 2000 Jetta Owner

I’ve just seen the dumbest commercial about VW’s.There’s a black man with a vw salesman, below them is a white man with his girl friend ,who is oriental, looking at a vw.Everytime he gets close to the car ,the black man presses the alarm. What does this mean?
How is this telling me to by this car?
