I didn’t feel like blogging about Katrina until just now…
I’ve spent a few hours listening to a Scanner Feed out of NO, helping to transcribe it over at IRC, reading some very incredible blogs (there were pictures here but they are down now) and seeing some excellent pictures that you don’t won’t get to see via any news publication.
Also, dramatic satellite pictures of NO:

WARNING, clicking will give you huge pictures
People are blaming Bush for the issues with the rescue operation (at least on fark).
Why I ask?
Why don’t we start blaming the ASSHATS that are shooting at patients trying to evacuate a hospital.
Why don’t we start blaming the French for God’s sake?
After all, they’re the one’s that built the city under sea level 400 years ago…
Thanks be to the chuckster for the thumbnails

There’s a lot wrong with this situation, not the least of which is that, as everyone has already said, the evacuation plan for New Orleans is set up where most of those left behind are poor (and most of the poor in NOLA are black). As it is now, evacuation opportunities depend on having cash, a private vehicle, etc. The idea to shelter people in the Superdome was a good one (by LA standards, anyway) in theory, but the situation deteriorated to the point that at least one person committed suicide. Can you imagine potentially having members of all the rival gangs in NOLA in one place? The junkies who can’t get a fix? It’s sweltering, there’s no legitimate way for people to get food, water, diapers, etc. (and there is NO EXCUSE for that), it’s wet, there’re mosquitos…the whole thing is a recipe for the kind of desperation and violence we’ve seen on TV. Most of those people had nothing to begin with, and if they had anything, it’s sure as hell gone now. And it’s a lot of people’s faults, including, but certainly NOT limited to, the federal government’s. Many people, myself included, are committed to finding a better way as soon as we can go home. There’s also the fact that this simply has never happened before; it flooded where it never floods and didn’t flood where it always floods.
Yeah, it kinda sucks that the greatest city in the world (imho) is in a giant doggie dish.
The people who truly love New Orleans, and I am one, will go back and rebuild it. Someone said once, which is true, that if you live there, you have to be prepared to give something back, not just sit back and enjoy the show.
Sorry if this is rambling. I’m really tired/worried/depressed/frightened…
