Since Jason called me out on his site jasonviana.com about my “obscure” music tastes, I figured it was fine time for me to talk about it…
Yesterday I heard the latest single from The Mars Volta called “The Widow” on Z 100.5.
Many of my friends have heard me rant and rave about this band ever since I happened to catch them on the “Next X” on The X the first and only time they were ever played on that station
.
Anyway, if you get a chance, check them out, they are like nothing you’ve ever heard before. An intense Aural smack upside the head. Their new album Frances the Mute will be out 2005/03/05
Until then…

But I read his blog entry about The Mars Volta here and decided to give them a try. I had been listening to The Widow for a while amongst my (too many) other tracks on Real Rhapsody (a service definitely worth the $9.99 a month, btw…you can find it here) and, while I could tell there was something different, it hadn’t peaked my interest enough to check out the whole album. Well, I found the whole album on Rhapsody and started listening to the first track. “Wow! Very different!” thought I…boy was I in for a shock! I went by the music store on the way home and bought the album, “Frances the Mute”. I listened on the way home, but it was a short drive. So, when I got home I put in the disk and started from Track 1 thinking I would listen for a while and then do some other stuff before turning in for the night. 70 some-odd minutes later I was still sitting in the same spot in stunned silence. This band stomped my head in the carpet and rubbed it in. I haven’t heard music like this (well, new music like this) in a long, long time. [...]
